Of Dice and Men

March 6, 2014 @ 8:00 pm - March 30, 2014 @ 3:00 pm

| $15.00

SYNOPSIS: John Francis is a dungeon master that can make a game come to life. When his friends gather around the gaming table, it is an exciting night filled with valiant quests, horrible monsters, and rare treasure.

But that friendship is tested when one players reveals to the group his startling decision to enlist in the army. John Francis is faced with questioning his hobby and thinks it might be time to hang up his bag of dice and grow up.

This play questions why we game, what it means to grow up, and the power of friendship.

ABOUT THE PLAY: Of Dice and Men is a celebration of Geek Culture and gamers in particular, about D&D and the friendships formed through gaming. The play was performed to packed houses at the gaming conventions PAX East in Boston, MA and PAX Prime in Seattle, Washington in 2010. Otherworld Theatre Company is proud to produce its Midwest Premiere.

Playwright Cameron McNary says, “I wanted to write about the kinds of gamers I knew, not the cheeto-stained, overweight, moms-basement-living stereotype, but the highly-functional, attractive, fun-to-be-around folks I game with. [Of Dice and Men is] important to gamers because it portrays gamers as the kind of people you want to be around, and the kind you want to be. It’s a hip, very funny, deeply touching play that challenges the stereotypes about gamers and gaming. It is geek art without the self-loathing. If you’ve ever wanted to take your mom or your girlfriend or your grandad to something and say, ‘Look: THIS is why I play’, and have them get it, now you can.”

REVIEWS OF THE PLAY: “It takes some fucking balls to put on a show anywhere, let alone in a converted convention room. Something special must have happened in there, though, because people wanted to talk about it for the remainder of the show.”– Tycho, Penny Arcade

Of Dice and Men made PAX for me. For laughter and tears, nothing else compared…They deserved the packed house and the standing ovation they got. You must see and become involved with this play if you ever have a chance.”– Chris Sims, Critical-Hits.com

“It is a play for our tribe, as McNary puts it. And yet this simple two act play could be a window through which mainstream, normal people could see us for what we are just as emotional, complex and hopeful as anyone else.”– M, Geek’s Dream Girl
