For January’s Book Club we will discussing The Peripheral by William Gibson. A noir-type murder mystery with Gibson’s signature cyberpunk take, this novel takes place in not one, but two futures: one in which a megastore chain and the meth trade has taken over America’s industry, and one version of London just after a nigh-disastrous event.
“Spectacular, a piece of trenchant, far-future speculation that features all the eyeball kicks of Neuromancer and all the maturity and sly wit of Spook Country. It’s brilliant.” — Cory Doctorow
What we discussed at the December’s Book Club meeting: we discussed City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett. We very much enjoyed this novel, as surprisingly grounded as it is—especially considering it deals with mysterious miracles and long-outlawed gods. The cultures and their respective colonialisms, along with the majority of the characters, are richly realized. More detailed notes available at Positron Chicago.
