Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #53
For February’s Book Club meeting we’ll be discussing Scud: The Disposable Assassin - The Whole Shebang! by Rob Schrab, Mondy Carter, Dan Harmon. In the world of Scud, bullets are cheaper than human life. Corner vending machines provide any weapon you might need. The most popular weapons are Scud disposable assassins: Robot hit men that self-destruct when they kill their target.
What we discussed at the last Book Club meeting:
For January’s Book Club meeting we discussed Divergent by Veronica Roth. In a dystopian version of Chicago, at age 16 everyone takes mandatory tests to determine their fate and are thus divided into five factions: Abnegation, meant to uphold selflessness; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intelligent. Some tests, however, come back indeterminate—or, as they call it, Divergent. Being Divergent is dangerous, and we follow Beatrice Prior in how this changes her life.
We enjoyed Divergent and think it suits its genre, young adult dystopian. The lack of world building was a bit off putting and we would love to know more about the history of the world’s society/factions. That aside this book is engaging and reads very quickly.
