Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #87
For December’s Book Club we will be reading Leviathan Wakes (The Expanse Book 1) by James S. A. Corey. Two hundred years after migrating into space, mankind is in turmoil. When a reluctant ship’s captain and washed-up detective find themselves involved in the case of a missing girl, what they discover brings our solar system to the brink of civil war, and exposes the greatest conspiracy in human history.
At November’s Book Club we read The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson. We enjoyed the story and enjoyed how wonderfully it was written with an almost dream like quality to it. Also It is unusual to find a adventure fantasy with an older woman as hero, that she wakes every morning with pain in her back and joints but goes on an adventure anyway, thinks about how she has aged without it being tragic. While loosely having ties to The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath by Lovecraft, Johnson weaves an original story in Lovecraft’s world but makes it her own.
Where: Filter Cafe, 1373 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60642
When: December 12th, 6:30PM - 7:30PM

I was discussing with my wife this morning about joining another book club. (My old job had one that I enjoyed)
I was thinking of getting away from Sci-fi so I had ruled out CNSC. But then I was thinking how much I wanted to read The Expanse series. Low and behold. Some things are just fate.
Unfortunately I’m booked that night as it stands now, but I’ll see what I can do.
Hey Jeff
I hope you are still able to make it tonight and if not then I hope you at least got a chance to read this epic space opera.
