Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #54
For February’s Book Club meeting we’ll be discussing The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. In the tenements of New York City in 1899, the masses of immigrants on the Lower East Side have two extraordinary beings among them: Chava and Ahmad, a golem and a jinni, both as bewildered by their circumstances as everyone around them.
What we discussed at the last Book Club meeting:
For February’s Book Club meeting we discussed Scud: The Disposable Assassin - The Whole Shebang! by Rob Schrab, Mondy Carter, Dan Harmon. In the world of Scud, bullets are cheaper than human life. Corner vending machines provide any weapon you might need. The most popular weapons are Scud disposable assassins: Robot hit men that self-destruct when they kill their target.
We enjoyed the supporting characters over the main characters and the smaller comedic beats over the huge arc of the story. Scud’s a challenge to folks new to graphic novels, but Drywall and Mess and their backstory help uplift The Whole Shebang.
When: Monday, March 10th, 2014 — 6:30pm-7:30pm
Where: Filter 1373-75 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL
