Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #61
For October’s Book Club we will discussing The Player of Games (Culture #2) by Iain M. Banks. The Culture - a human/machine symbiotic society - has thrown up many great Game Players, and one of the greatest is Gurgeh. Jernau Morat Gurgeh. The Player of Games. Master of every board, computer and strategy. Bored with success, Gurgeh travels to the Empire of Azad, cruel and incredibly wealthy, to try their fabulous game…a game so complex, so like life itself, that the winner becomes emperor.
What we discussed at the September’s Book Club meeting: The Martian by Andy Weir. We liked seeing what was happening on Mars, Earth and the Hermes ship but was really missing was more of the emotional impact of all of this. Also the constant repeat of new crisis/engineering solution started to wear a little thin towards the end and some of the science, sounded convincing but was really shaky. Overall this was a fast, funny, enjoyable read and should make for a interesting movie staring Matt Damon.
When: Monday, October 13th, 2014 6:30pm-7:30pm
