Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #42

For March’s book club meeting we will be reading The Rook by Daniel O’Malley. Mix a touch of Bourne Identity with a smidge of X-Men and you get the story of Myfanwy Thomas, who can’t remember her past. She’s quickly thrust into the world of a secret spy organization employing people with extraordinary abilities—yet still tries to find out more about her history.
What we discussed at the last book club meeting:
For February’s book club meeting we read The Princess Bride by William Goldman.
What’s it about? Fencing. Fighting. True Love. Strong Hate. Harsh Revenge. A Few Giants. Lots of Bad Men. Lots of Good Men. Five or Six Beautiful Women. Beasties Monstrous and Gentle. Some Swell Escapes and Captures. Death, Lies, Truth, Miracles, and a Little Sex. In short, it’s about everything.
Some of our attendees had fond memories of reading this or seeing the movie from years ago, but not all thought it held up to a second reading or even reading for the first time after seeing the movie. Later editions of the book added new introductions and an extra chapter, a pseudo-sequel sneak peek—and almost unanimously, we found these were unhelpful to the core story (if you can call it that). Meta in a way that supposedly excuses the author for all blame for the events of the story, The Princess Bride unfortunately doesn’t hold up to its movie counterpart.
On to the next book!
