Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #60
For September’s book club meeting we’ll be discussing The Martian by Andy Weir, in which a NASA astronaut gets stranded on Mars.
From Chapter 1 of the book: “I’m stranded on Mars. I have no way to communicate with… Earth. Everyone thinks I’m dead. I’m in a Hab designed to last 31 days. If the Oxygenator breaks down, I’ll suffocate. If the Water Reclaimer breaks down, I’ll die of thirst. If the Hab breaches, I’ll just kind of explode. If none of those things happen, I’ll eventually run out of food and starve to death. So yeah. I’m f—-d.” - Mark Watney
What we discussed at the last book club meeting: Blindsight by Peter Watts. Dense with scientific principles from many disciplines—biology, psychology, physics, chemistry, and more—this book can be a slow read. That said, the combinations and applications of principles can be fascinating, though the characterization could probably be improved. Many of us would recommend it, but with caveats.
When: Monday, September 8th, 2014 6:30pm-7:30pm
