Scott Murphy

Scott Murphy is someone you would classify as your standard video nerd, with a little bit of computer nerd thrown in for good measure. Scott got his start in video at ripe old age of 9 when he recorded his elementary school’s “Talent” show using a Sony single tube camera with a ¾” deck. He could regularly be seen shooting video segments for the morning announcements throughout elementary school. During Junior High he took some time off from his busy cable access schedule to start his first computer club. With a group of 9 other guys, he managed to get just about every local business to donate their old computer hardware – which eventually filled an entire empty classroom. With this equipment, the club was able to assemble an entire computer lab running a variety of exciting operating systems like DR DOS, Windows 3.1, OS 2 and a few others I can’t remember. He even convinced the school to allow them to use the phone system at night to host a BBS, which eventually had over 200 users.

By the time Scott started High School, he was back into video in a big way. During his sophomore year, he directed his first national satellite broadcast Mayaquest LIVE! Which was produced completely by High School students at KHOP-TV in Hopkins, MN. By his junior year, he had his first paying job in television with what was at the time called the “Value Vision” network (now ShopNBC). He worked for Value Vision for a year before moving on the local CBS owned and operated station, WCCO. At the age of 17, he was the youngest CBS Television employee.

After graduating High School Scott moved to Chicago, where he attended Columbia College Chicago for Television Broadcasting. While there he helped pioneer Newsbeat, the schools daily news broadcast.

Fast-forward to now – Scott is the Director of Technology for a Television Production Company. He’s had a number of jobs while in Chicago including Paramedic, Volunteer Fire Fighter, Part-time Police Officer, Television News Photographer, Community Outreach Coordinator for Apple and IT Consultant.

Despite his best efforts – Scott remains single.

He’s been known to spew his random thoughts about flying, IT, The Civil Air Patrol and cooking on his blog: http://www.whatthewhonow.com.
