Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #47
For August’s Book Club meeting we’ll be discussing The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. This novel circles around a time-traveling serial killer based in Chicago, featuring many events in Chicago history like the World’s Fair, the flooding in the Loop in the 90s, ship-building in the area during World War II, and the renovation of the Congress Hotel. The Shining Girls was recently reviewed by NPR as one of 5 Great SF and Fantasy Summer Reads.
What we discussed at the last book club meeting:
For July’s Book Club meeting we read Jumper by Steven Gould. Jumper tells the story of David Rice, a teenager who escapes an abusive father using his ability to teleport. And as David explores his new power he learns that the world is literally his for the taking. But there are consequences too.
We found it an enjoyable popcorn young adult-styled novel both in ease of reading and whininess of the teenaged male protagonist. That said, the character does develop past that attitude, thankfully. We also found the issue of abuse to be portrayed well, which is a rarity.
When: Monday, August 12th, 2013 — 6:30pm-7:30pm
Where: Filter 1373-75 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL
