Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #48
For September’s Book Club meeting we will be discussing The Burn Zone by James K. Decker. Plagued by overpopulation, disease, and starvation, humanity was headed for extinction—until an alien race called the Haan arrived. And then the real trouble began.
“Fast, unrelenting, and uncompromising, The Burn Zone is an adventure you won’t want to miss.”—New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant.
What we discussed at the last Book Club meeting:
For August’s Book Club meeting we read The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes. This novel circles around a time-traveling serial killer based in Chicago, featuring many events in Chicago history like the World’s Fair, the flooding in the Loop in the 90s, ship-building in the area during World War II, and the renovation of the Congress Hotel. The Shining Girls was recently reviewed by NPR as one of 5 Great SF and Fantasy Summer Reads.
This is an extremely intense and dark crime novel and at times disturbing, this isn’t a story that will leave you feel comfortable after finishing. Very detailed and very well thought out plot and there are not really any of the usual plot holes that seem to be unavoidable in time travel stories. Overall we thought this book was intriguing and thought provoking.
