Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #55
For April’s Book Club meeting we will be discussing The Magicians by Lev Grossman. It tells the story of Quentin Coldwater, a teenager from Brooklyn, New York, who discovers that the magical world he’s read about in books is real.
“Most people will like this book. But there’s a certain type of reader who will enjoy it down to the bottoms of their feet.” —Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Name of the Wind
What we discussed at the last Book Club meeting:
For March’s Book Club meeting we discussed The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker. In the tenements of New York City in 1899, the masses of immigrants on the Lower East Side have two extraordinary beings among them: Chava and Ahmad, a golem and a jinni, both as bewildered by their circumstances as everyone around them.
The Golem and the Jinni is an engrossing and complex book, Helene Wecker put a lot of research into this book though her writing isn’t weighed down by that research. The world is incredibly rich and understandable since it’s drawing on two separate legacies of extensive mythology on top of a real history of the ethnic diversity and tension of a turn of the century New York City. There is a lot of hype around this book and we say it’s definitely worth while to read.
When: Monday, April 14th, 2014 — 6:30pm-7:30pm
