Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #70

Hyperion_cover

For July’s Book Club we will be reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Winner of the 1990 Hugo Award, folks pitching this novel call it “the Canterbury Tales in space.” With multiple characters, timelines and styles, this book opens the Hyperion Cantos and follows a priest, a soldier, a poet, a scholar, a detective, and a consul.

At June’s Book Club we discussed The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison. Most of us enjoyed it, though we had many quibbles with it. It had surprisingly subtle intrigue and not a ton of action, which made the pace rather slow. The naming convention for high society led to many similar names, creating confusion especially for those who didn’t realize there was a glossary. That said, even if there were quibbles, the majority found it a good read, and would recommend it, especially to younger audiences, though it’s not considered a YA novel.
