Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #73
For October’s Book Club we will be reading Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor. A massive object crashes off the coast of Lagos, and three strangers wandering the beach nearby wind up as crucial in this first-contact story. With multiple points of view exploring both city life and marine life, the novel explores Lagos in all its complexity as well as what it means to be human.
At September’s Book Club we discussed Throne of the Crescent Moon by Saladin Ahmed. Pitched to the group as “Arabian Nights-like,” this medieval fantasy is based in a complicated political metropolis that seems to be a combination of historic Baghdad and an Arabic fairy tale. We found it extremely digestible with excellent world-building, but ultimately rather forgettable, with characters that often seemed one-note (with a few exceptions). More detailed notes available at Positron Chicago.
When: Monday, October 12th, 2015 6:30pm-7:30pm
Where: Filter Cafe 1373-75 N. Milwaukee Ave
