Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #85

ghosttalkers

For October’s Book Club we will be reading Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal. Ginger Stuyvesant, an American heiress living in London during World War I, is a medium for the Spirit Corps, a special Spiritualist force that helps pass instant information about troop movements to military intelligence via the recent dead from the front. But left to her own devices, Ginger has to find out how the Germans are targeting the Spirit Corps and stop them.

At September’s Book Club we read The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross. Bob Howard, our low-level techie, bites off more than he can chew working for The Laundry, a super-secret government agency. With echoes of The Dresden Files, Lovecraft, and the Martian, this has (somewhat dated) competence porn written all over it: Bob rattles off the tech specs of how to use his “palmtop” to detect occult workings. Most of us enjoyed it overall, though pointed out several spots that could have been better: depth of character, dated tech, etc. A fun romp, and definitely interesting to look closer at the overlap between spy and hacker and how that combo might interact with horrors from beyond.
