Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #86

The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe

For November’s Book Club we will be reading The Dream-Quest of Vellitt Boe by Kij Johnson. Professor Vellitt Boe teaches at the prestigious Ulthar Women’s College. When one of her most gifted students elopes with a dreamer from the waking world, Vellitt must retrieve her. “By the time we finish this gorgeously written tale, we’re about convinced that Lovecraft’s wriggly gods and monsters are no match for smart women.” ― The Chicago Tribune

At October’s Book Club we read Ghost Talkers by Mary Robinette Kowal. Ghost Talkers follows Ginger Stuyvensant of the British Army’s Spirit Corps, a secret group of mediums who take the reports of soldiers who have died on the front lines. We enjoyed the premise of the book, dead soldier’s reporting information relating to their deaths to mediums. Kowal build a fantastic world that shows the gores of war and the loving relationship of Ginger and her fiancé. We wished Kowal would of spent more time writing about some of the secondary characters and the world to further explore PTSD, women’s rights, and POC. Overall it was a fast and enjoyable read and we are looking forward to further adventures of Ginger Stuyvesant.

I am fairly new (2 years) to Chicago and just joined your organization. I am very interested in this book club and wonder if you have room for another person.
