Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #94
Update: Moving to Filter Cafe for tonight! Volumes Book Cafe is having a Author event. Apologies for the late notice.
For July’s book club we will be reading Borne by Jeff Vandermeer. A young woman named Rachel survives as a scavenger in a ruined city half destroyed by drought and conflict. The city is dangerous, littered with discarded experiments from the Company and punished by the unpredictable predations of a giant bear. Rachel ekes out an existence in the shelter of a run-down sanctuary she shares with her partner, Wick, who deals his own homegrown psychoactive biotech.
“VanderMeer’s apocalyptic vision, with its mix of absurdity, horror, and grace, can’t be mistaken for that of anyone else. Inventive, engrossing, and heartbreaking, Borne finds [VanderMeer] at a high point of creative accomplishment.” ―Michael Berry, San Francisco Chronicle
At our June meeting, we discussed The Prestige by Christopher Priest. The Prestige is an exciting story about two feuding rival magicians and how their obsession with their craft shaped their personal and professional lives. It is also study in dualities: What is seen versus what is actually happening both in their magical acts and the first person narratives of these unreliable narrators, Borden versus Angier (in their contrasting upbringings, in their ideologies, in their physical appearances, etc.)
When: July 10th 6:30PM – 7:30PM
Where: Volumes Bookcafe, 1474 N Milwaukee Ave, Chicago, IL 60622
