Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #96

The Three-Body Problem

For September’s Book Club we will be discussing The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu (Author), Ken Liu (Translator). Set against the backdrop of China’s Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion.

At our August meeting we discussed Embassytown by China Miéville. The novel starts off slow and the characters aren’t deeply written and many found the protagonist Avice Benner Cho two dimensional and seemed like she was a device to move the story along. That being said Embassytown is a beautifully written novel, Miéville wrote how the mind changes language and language changes the mind, about power and respect, about colonialism and self-determination.
