The Chatroom
The Chatroom
Date: February 8th at 7:00pm
Location: Next Door 659 West Diversey Parkway, Chicago
Cost: Free
We’ve decided to host a different kind of event in 2013. It occurred to us that nerds also love to talk about ideas. Big ideas that sometimes have trouble finding the right audience and atmosphere for discussion. We want to try and create that atmosphere with our new event called The Chatroom.
The goal is to create a social circle where ideas and topics of all ranges can be discussed. Everything from painful ways to fix America’s fiscal problems to the impact on the world if we find life on other planets. No topic is taboo, but we have to remember to be respectful of everyone’s views. The idea is to see a problem or issue from all perspectives, even those we may night find particularly palpable.
Because of the nature of these discussions we’ll be taking the respect angle very seriously. I think we’re all mature enough however to have good welcome discussion.
If you have an idea for our initial kick-off conversation, send an e-mail to [email protected]. We’ll setup a poll of some of the most popular suggestions and have attendees vote prior to the meeting. We look forward to seeing you there!

Hi , I am new to book clubs but have always been a sci fi junkie. I would like to join your book club, but I’m not sure how to go about it. Thanks
@Sandra Hi Sandra - You can just show up to our next book club meeting. It’s January 14th at Filter. When you arrive the group usually meets in the center area near the couches. Filter is located at 1373 North Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, IL 60642.
On Feb 8th I’ll be chatting with nerds at Capricon (www.capricon.org), one of Chicago’s primary fan-run science fiction conventions. I’ll see if I can make the next one, sounds like the chicago-sf.org monthly social but more focused.
Am I correct that your plan is to try to hold the conversation to one particular topic at each meeting?
@Rich Yup that’s the goal. But the spirit of the conversation will largely influence how many topics we go over. Sorry for the late response.
Can’t make this one, hadn’t realized the overlap with Capricon.
