Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #51
For December’s Book Club meeting we will be discussing Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie. Ancillary Justice is a tale of war crimes whose astropolitical scope is stunning. It’s a military thriller, a mystery, and a very complicated love story about sentient starships and hive minds in an alien civilization that looks a lot like something out of Earth’s history.
What we discussed at the last Book Club meeting:
For November’s Book Club meeting we discussed Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. A nightmarish traveling carnival visits the Midwest one October and two teenage boys soon go exploring. The novel has long been considered a masterful blend of fantasy and horror, one appropriate to the season at hand.
Something Wicked This Way Comes is a beautifully written novel with a wonderful style. Bradbury transforms this novel into an allegory of the struggle between good and evil. The ending does have a certain “oh please!” moment but Bradbury’s mastery of the English language makes Something Wicked This Way Comes worth the effort.
When: Monday, December 9th, 2013 — 6:30pm-7:30pm
Where: Filter 1373-75 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL Cost: Free
