Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #76
For January’s Book Club we will be reading Uprooted by Naomi Novik. Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.
At December’s Book Club we discussed Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor. Welcome to Night Vale is set in the world of the popular podcast series of the same name and written by the same authors. The novel is a great extension of the Night Vale world, but the constant weirdness and linguistic trickery can be really tiring to read, and some parts, especially in the middle of the book, felt overlong. The plot picks up later in the book, becoming a wonderfully creepy tale filled with revelations about the nature of the town and its residents. If you’re a fan of Welcome to Night Vale, this novel is definitely required reading. If you’re new, but what you’ve heard has intrigued you, give the first episode or two a listen before you start.
