Science Fiction & Fantasy Bookclub #38
For November’s book club meeting we will be reading The Last Policeman: A Novel by Ben H. Winters. What’s the point in solving murders if we’re all going to die soon, anyway? Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. There’s no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact.
“Winters is masterful in crafting a plausible image of a society that’s hanging onto sanity by its fingernails as it teeters on the edge of mass hysteria….This is a novel that grabs ahold of you and doesn’t let you go until the very end.”—The Nashua Telegraph
“The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States.”—Tor.com
What we discussed at the last book club meeting:
We read Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved.
We had a very lively discussion about carelessness of scientific developments, the interaction with genetic research and possible consequences of all this. It shows a different perspective, quite possible of what can happen when we become dependent on science as we are on technology today.
