CNSC Will Not Be Promoting Ender’s Game
The Ender’s Game film has generated a lot of discussion in the months leading up to the film’s release this Friday. Recently, CNSC was approached by Summit Entertainment to do a promotional event for Ender’s Game. While we are pleased that our group merited this level of attention, considering some of the discussions that took place regarding the film, the author and his views, the Board decided it was not in our interests to promote or support the film in an official capacity.
CNSC is NOT passing judgement on anyone’s personal desire to see or not see the film. We will be happy to continue hosting discussions about the film in our Facebook group. But with it being a potentially divisive issue and the kind of message it would send regarding how seriously CNSC takes its mission of inclusivity for ALL nerds, many of whom are part of the LGBTQ community, taking part in promoting the film wasn’t worth it in our minds.
Below is our official response to Summit Entertainment. Please feel free to express your opinions about it on this post, but keep the conversation civil. Moderation on this thread will be heavy.
Hello Madison:
First off, I’d like to thank you for thinking of the Chicago Nerd Social Club and reaching out to us. After careful consideration we’ve decided to pass on any promotional efforts for Ender’s Game. CNSC is an inclusive community and we count many members of the LGBTQ community as family and friends. With that said, the book’s author has repeatedly expressed a particularly vile and harsh opinion of the LGBTQ community. We cannot consciously as a group support the film in any official capacity.
We understand that OSC’s views are not reflective of Summit Entertainment’s but unfortunately the two are linked in this particular instance. The Ender’s Game film has of course been talked about at great lengths in our community and we have not and will not discourage members from viewing it on their own. I hope you can understand our position and we really would love to collaborate with you on any other future films you think would be of interest to our community. Feel free to reach out to either me directly or through our [email protected] address.
Thanks again,
Jeff Smith, CNSC Founder & Board President
