Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #50

For November’s Book Club meeting we will be discussing Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. A nightmarish traveling carnival visits the Midwest one October and two teenage boys soon go exploring. The novel has long been considered a masterful blend of fantasy and horror, one appropriate to the season at hand.

What we discussed at the last Book Club meeting:

For October’s Book Club meeting we read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell are two of the only magicians of the age—early 1800s England. Eventually the two disagree on the very foundations of what magic is to do for England and each pursue their own ends.

This massive novel (with plentiful footnotes) divided the group: some really liked it, and others really couldn’t get into the writing style. It inhabits England of the early 1800s extremely well, down to the spelling of the time, and it’s lush in composition rather than brusque, as is the current style. For those that couldn’t get into the style and setting, the book was unfortunately lost on them. For those that could immerse themselves, they enjoyed it quite a bit.
