Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club #71
For August’s Book Club we will be reading Dark Orbit by Carolyn Ives Gilman. When a new planet is discovered, 58 light years away from the Twenty Planets, exoethnologist Sara Callicot is one of the scientists sent to explore it. She’s also secretly assigned to protect Thora Lassiter, a mystic who was involved in unrest on the planet Orem. When their ship reaches the planet Iris, they find it surrounded by dark matter. Soon a member of the crew dies, Thora disappears, and the scientists find a civilization in the heart of the planet that challenges their preconceptions
“Intellectually daring, brilliantly imagined, strongly felt. This one’s a winner.” - Ursula K. Le Guin.
At July’s Book Club we discussed Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Hyperion is an astonishing accomplishment. Simmons has created fascinating and well rounded characters and dropped them into a rich universe. The formal structure of the book shows off his ability to write in different styles and genres. The stories of the seven travelers include a love story, a horror story, a noir detective thriller and a tale of a father’s love for his daughter, and they all work together and add to the complexity of this novel. More detailed notes available at Positron Chicago.
