Science Fiction & Fantasy Bookclub #33
For June’s meeting, we’ll be reading Locke and Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. We’re returning to the graphic novel format after our successful last foray with Fables exactly two years ago. Locke and Key has won an Eisner for Best Writer and a British Fantasy Award for Best Comic or Graphic Novel and has been nominated for many other awards.
In Locke and Key, the Locke family moves to their family estate in Lovecraft, Massachusetts after the murder of the father of the family. One of the children finds The Ghost Door as the series opens.
Join us for discussion of our current book as well as helping decide our next selection.
This is what you missed at our last bookclub meeting:
We read Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. In Snow Crash, Hiro Protagonist and Y.T. (Yours Truly) investigate a new pseudo-narcotic called Snow Crash, which people experience both in real life and in the Metaverse.
Most liked it (though most had also read it before), though concern was raised about characterization and how confusing the many corporations in the book could be. Overall, though, we had an excellent discussion about the themes, characters and items in the novel.
When: Monday, June 11, 2011 – 6:30pm-8:00pm
Where: Filter, 1373-75 N Milwaukee Ave Chicago, IL
